Can I pack up my SSA retirement benefits if I decide to live abroad?
As a US citizen the answer is largely yes, unless you decide to live in North Korea, Cuba, parts of Central Asia or any currently sanctioned locations. If you’re considering making the move, it’s suggested to get everything in order with Social Security before you leave stateside. It can be problematic to move first and then try to have matters set up once living outside of the US.
- The best course of action is to check up front with the Agency first and communicate along the way if there are any changes to where you live. They will keep tabs on you too. Annually or every two years depending upon your age and if the type of benefits (retirement, spousal, survivor, etc.) you receive they will send a questionnaire. They want to make sure that YOU are still the one receiving YOUR benefits. Also, the amount of earned income you receive is to be reported. Those under full retirement age are still subject to the earnings test.
- Don’t forget no matter where you are worldwide income is subject to tax unless you happen to have an applicable exclusion.
Like most things, planning is worth the effort, whether you plan an extended stay or a home on a different continent. Plan ahead so you can fully enjoy!
