Is Social Security a Set It and Forget It Matter?

Often people think that Social Security is a set it and forget item. This isn’t always true; a client called me after she received a notice from the administration that her 𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗩𝗜𝗩𝗢𝗥 𝗕𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗧𝗦 were being reduced by $400.00 a month! Can you imagine how distressing that is after receiving benefit checks for decades? Together we placed a call to the SSA office and got to the bottom of the issue.

What was happening but not necessarily communicated to her is that her own independent benefits over the course of many years with COLA increases had finally surpassed those of her SURVIVOR BENEFITS. She was not going to get any less money, yet the ‘classification’ of those benefits changed from SURVIVOR BENEFITS into those based upon my client’s own 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗨𝗔𝗟 𝗥𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗥𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗙𝗜𝗧𝗦. She wasn’t receiving less benefits after all. Plus, she was so relieved to have the answers needed to a seemingly VERY stressful situation.
